Philip Morris USA - Youth Smoking Prevention

Since 1999, Philip Morris USA's Youth Smoking Prevention department has provided grants to support positive youth development and healthy alternatives for kids. Their grant-making is directed to schools, school districts and youth-serving organizations to help them implement life skills education programs, after-school and sports activities, and mentoring youth and youth cessation programs.  These programs can help kids develop confidence and skills that can help them avoid risky behaviors, like smoking and using tobacco products.

Currently, Philip Morris USA sponsors two Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) programs:

Upward Bound is an internal strategy for improving how BGCA (the national organization) delivers support services to Boys & Girls Clubs. The centerpiece of this strategy is a powerful tool known as Standards of Organizational Effectiveness, benchmarks that Clubs use to measure their overall operational effectiveness.

SMART (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) Moves is a nationally-acclaimed prevention initiative in Boys & Girls Clubs that helps young people resist tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, and avoid premature sexual activity. The program features activities that help youth build peer support, enhance life skills, build resiliency and strengthen leadership skills. This comprehensive initiative engages Club staff, parents, community members and teen Club members in a team approach to prevention.
